The Acropolis of Selinus rises above the Mediterranean coast on a rocky hill and is the most impressive part of the ancient city of Selinus. From the top, visitors enjoy panoramic views of Gazipaşa, the coastline, nearby beaches, and the Hacımusa River valley. With a history spanning more than two thousand years, Selinus was once an important Roman port. In A.D. 117, Emperor Trajan died here while returning from his eastern campaign, and for a period the city became known as Trajanopolis. The hill preserves sections of ancient defensive walls, a large cistern, and the remains of a 12th-century Armenian fortress built over earlier fortifications. Walking along the stone paths offers a glimpse into the strategic importance of this hill, which overlooked both the harbor and the surrounding coastline. Unlike many famous archaeological sites in Türkiye, the Acropolis of Selinus remains quiet and uncrowded, making it an ideal destination for visitors who enjoy history, photography, and spectacular sea views.
