Extremely high levels of microplastic pollution detected off Alanya
A scientific assessment of the coastline of Alanya, one of Türkiye's major Mediterranean tourism destinations, has revealed alarming levels of microplastic pollution. The study was commissioned by Alanya Municipality following numerous complaints from residents and tourists. At some sampling locations, concentrations were reported to be up to 60–65 times higher than levels previously recorded in studies along Türkiye's Mediterranean coast.
Researchers collected samples from four coastal stations. The highest concentration was recorded off Damlataş, reaching approximately 34.05 million microplastic particles per square kilometre. Depending on the sampling station, 59% to 93% of the particles showed processing characteristics associated with plastic recycling activities.
Researchers are examining several possible sources, including plastic recycling operations around Adana and Mersin, illegal wastewater discharges, exceptionally heavy rainfall and flooding, and Mediterranean currents capable of transporting plastic particles along the coast. The assessment stresses that the exact contribution of each source has not yet been conclusively established.
Scientists are calling for tighter inspections of recycling facilities, continuous wastewater monitoring and a “zero microplastic discharge” standard. Alanya officials warn that without urgent measures, the pollution could threaten both the Mediterranean ecosystem and the region's tourism industry.
